As an American who was raised overseas, I now have excellent reason for being grateful that I was provided with an education far exceeding what is the apparent US norm. Not only did my instructors from various countries provide me with a somewhat more cosmopolitan perspective and the desire to think for myself, I was also taught American English grammar, punctuation, spelling and general sentence structure, skills apparently not pursued educationally in the United States (judging from a number of the comments here). The ability to communicate effectively proved beneficial during my voluntary combat tours in the US Armed Forces.

Dan, thank you. I spent two years in Iraq and both times worked with detainment facilities. The prisioners DO NOT have access to the internet, its just like the author said, they over hear the guards discussions and pick up on things. wow people, reading in-between the lines a little bit too much?

Man some of you got anger management issues. I mean seriously has it come to this in America where insults replace the decorum of having a decent conversation? This article made me think as to how these guards aren't really paying attention to the environment around them. Myself being a former prison guard you have to watch what you say around prisoners whether they be from Iraq or here in the states. They can use what they hear around you as fodder against you and your partner and that right there is not what you want to do. A little more professionalism on their part can go a long way and save their life if need be.

I think you misunderstood me. I am not a "Bible Thumper". I think it's absurd to take The Bible literally. However, I used the phrase "What I think is right and these people are dumb asses" to describe the two ends of the spectrum: there are those who blindly trust everything in The Bible (or whatever text one might live one's life by) and offer no serious thought as to what that text might be telling them, i.e. many people will take a text and shape its message to fit what they desire from it. This is a poor approach and will not bring someone to anything resembling truth and virtue in life. On the other hand, people that automatically dismiss a text like The Bible because there are a great amount of absurdities in it are themselves being foolish: if one applies rational questioning to something like The Bible, many lessons or notions on how to live can be gained, and these things would at the very least inspire thought and more questioning in a person, which I think we can agree is a good thing.

It is, I think, irrelevant who first wished cancer upon another. It is wrong regardless. And if what you say is so, that is was a "Bible thumper" who first did this, well, then that person has very little understanding of The Bible, in my view.

I can speak for what I have seen and I can also tell you that some of these idiots who are responsible for the mistreatment of these detainees REPRESENT AN EXTREMELY SMALL PERCENTAGE of our men and women in uniform. There are plenty of people in my unit who disagree with every point of view I have. That doesn't bother me at all. We are all entitled to our opinions. When ignorant people call our military personnel "barbarians" and "imperialists," I take issue with that. It has nothing to do with them disagreeing with my point of view. Anyways, these guys would often pretend to not know English to listen in to the Soldiers conversation. I would know because I worked with the 'tainers in Iraq unfortunately.

I served 10 months in the Camp Cropper Detainment facility with the NJ Army National Gaurd and it's funny because we were relieved by this very Wisconsin unit. Anyway, about the detainees..many of them are not convicted of any crimes yet. Many of them are responsible for rape, torture, extortion...mass murder..attacking and killing coalition forces. It's not soldier's job to judge them. Most of the time we don't know either way so we all have to treat them the same. You wanna hear about Cropper though? You could be convicted for severely violent crimes as a detainee at Cropper..and if you get sick a medic will rush to you. They will bring you in for exams and treat you. They will give you percocet, prosthetics and eye glasses. Your tax dollars give people that want nothing more than America to falter new teeth. You also give them, at Camp Cropper, multiple multi million dollar megatrons so that detainees can watch soccer and The Mask. If a soldier or broke I hope it's something Ibuprofen can cure because that's all your getting. Anyway, they don't have access to the internet, but every detainee has the ability to enroll in English, Arabic, Writing, Carpenty, Sewing, Art or Computer class. lol. And people are getting mad because Gitmo even EXISTS? Theres alot of people that have alot to say and really don't know shit in this country. That is our problem. We need Patton back.
