Tom Watson tees off on Tiger Woods: 'He needs to show some humility to the public'

Opinions on Tiger Woods come cheaply these days; who doesn't have a take on this mess? His peers on the PGA Tour have been less chatty, however; and those who have ventured a few syllables have shown general solidarity. But no one figured on the venerable Tom Watson, unlikely second-place finisher at the 2009 British Open despite being 59; which is older than many trees. When asked when he thought Tiger would return to golf, Watson could have taken a mulligan. Instead, he took a couple of swipes at the world's favorite tabloid sensation, admonishing Woods for a variety of misbehaviors. And suddenly a coma-inducing interview turned interesting.

Video following the jump.

Watson talked with NBC affiliate KSHB-TV from his home in Kansas City, and toward the end of the interview was asked when he thought Tiger would return to the links.

"He will be back at some point this year. But it's really up to Tiger to get his personal life in order, and his golf is really secondary. It's bad for our game. It's something he needs to get control of and a handle on and make some amends and show some humility to the public when he comes back.
"His swearing and his club throwing, that should end. That's not part of what we want to project as far as the professional golf tour is concerned."

Here's a link to the rather lengthy video interview with Watson. Scroll to the 18:50 mark for the Tiger comments.

Here's a shorter version.

Of course its debatable that Tiger's actions -- both on and off the course -- have been "bad for golf." I have a feeling that, if and when he comes back, attendance and television ratings will go through the roof. Watson should have said "bad for golf's image," I suppose. Hey, when you're nearly 60, self censorship isn't that important. Agree with him or not, it's refreshing to hear someone say what he's really thinking.

Tom Watson Chides Tiger For Scandal, Swearing [SportsbyBrooks]
Tom Watson expects better from Tiger [The Golf Channel]

Is pleasing the Fifth sucking it down straight out of the bottle?

I love when people reprimand who don't have their own personal affairs in order. To bring up swearing and throwing clubs is childish. It wasn't an issue before so it shouldn't be now.

He should have more of an opinion on Mickelson whose been accused on cheating although given the current rules his clubs are legal.

"Mickelson conceded at a Wednesday press conference that while he knew the Eye 2 clubs didn't conform to the new rules, they nonetheless were legal, and that was good enough for him: "All that matters is it's OK under the rules of golf."

What B.S. are the rules of golf in regards to the grooves. It is really a shame how everyone has to adhere to the new standards, unless you happen to have the old Ping I-2's. What kind of B.S. is that?

First, I am a Tiger fan (still is and will always be).

Watson thinks he is "holier than thou," just like the rest who CRUCIFIED Tiger for his infidelity.

For Watson to call out on Tiger for Tiger's indiscretion is HYPROCICY in its highlest level. Did Watson forget that he himself, while married, had an affair with another golfer's wife (which led to his divorce) according to one blogger? Yes, Tiger screwed up a lot floosies, but not a married woman who happens to be another golfer's wife, which Mr. Watson did. Yes, it still doesn't justify what Tiger did and Tiger really screwed up BIG TIME!

But that is the big difference between Tiger screwing up and Watson (et al.) screwing up. But because Tiger is the MOST FAMOUS ATHLETE (and Watson only known as a senior golfer with very little accomplishment), there is so much brouhaha about this and some of his peers don't have the decency to STAY OUT of Tiger's personal business but instead are taking a stab at him.

After all is said and done, what Tiger did is WRONG and he is paying for it now. But for all those "HOLIER THAN THOU" golfers like Watson, Parnevik, Mahan, Ogilvie, et al. (as well as others), please make sure you don't have a skeleton in your own closet before you take a stab at Tiger. Because in this age of Google and savvy media, every skeleton you have will come out in the open (it happened to the once most powerful man like President Clinton, presidential candidate Edwards, Senators and now Tiger Woods). EVERYONE IS FAIR GAME!

I think what Tom Watson is doing is protecting the history and respect that he has for the game. I'm older than Watson and when I was being taught the game I was also taught the tradition and history of golf. Watching the greats of the game as I was growing up I rarely saw displays of temper and certainly never heard swearing. Tiger seems to have no respect for the game at all, it's all about winning. He plays what I call "full contact golf" and the trouble with that is that every young guy than I play with now plays the same way. Drop a 3 foot putt and the Tiger pose and yell are on display. I miss the days of a "quiet walk in the park". And because of Tiger I rarely watch golf on TV, unless he's not playing.

I'm glad one the game's greatest has come forward with an honest opinion. I'm still pissed at Tiger for living a lie and at myself for thinking he was better than the rest. Now I guess many will welcome him back because he's "so human" like John Daily. If so, then I'll put him in that category instead of alongside Arnie, Jack, Gary, and Tom, where he easily belonged until the real Tiger stepped forward. Thanks for not buying into crap Tom.

"I love when people reprimand who don't have their own personal affairs in order."

Let's see, I thought this was commentary concerning Tom Watson's take on Tiger Woods. If so, then the above quote is "childish" as Tom Watson is one of the finest sportsmen in the game of professional golf.

(and Watson only known as a senior golfer with very little accomplishment),

Uh, I believe he's won 8 majors including 5 British Opens and 2 Masters. He's very credible and has every right as a senior representative of the PGA tour and one who helped build it, to suggest to Tiger to show some humility.

u probably think blacks should still be sitting in the back of the bus too, i bet.

I find it particularly distressing that you consistently bring up your own agendas in your posts. This article is about Watson's comments on Tiger Woods; not about Michelson or square grooves or anything else. Secondly, Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer are probably golf's greatest ambasadors. They love the game, they love to compete and when someone disparages their pasion for the game, they respond. Tom Watson's life is in order, he has been nothing but a positive influence on the game for 30 odd years and he continues to be one of the great men of the game.

Tiger is arguably the best to ever play the game. However, his conduct off the course has definitely hurt the game and the PGA. I agree with Tom that Tiger should make amends for that and I believe that he will, but it will take time.

Don't demonize Watson for giving his opinion. He has earned his respect with his play as a pro and Tiger would do well to listen to him and others who might not be so vocal, but certainly feel the same way.

In response to lee saying Watson is only Known as a senior golfer with very little accomplishment, what game is he talking about?
Tom Watson has won eight major tournaments, thirty nine total PGA tounaments, was ranked #1 in the world from 1978 to 1982,won the money title five times, and has won 13 champions titles. I could go on but why? I think Mr. Watson has earned the right to express his opinion about the good of the game.

You must be kidding right!!! History of a game that didn't let Blacks or any non-white play the game!!!! Please do not bring up this up, because if they are turning over in their graves knowing that a BLACK MAN is going down as the BEST GOLFER PERIOD.

I hate it when people say need to protect the history of the game...

And who is Watson? Why would anyone care about all this, especially his opinion ?

Watson also won the U.S. Open and was rated #1 in the world golf rankins for 6 straight years in the middle 80s. Watson one two of his majors at the expense of Jack Nicklaus. I agree with you, Lucky, Watson is just the person to have said what he said and Tiger should heed his advice. As to the clown who indicated that Watson was unaccomplished, the guy needs to take a mulligan.

Refers to Andre's comment "u probably think blacks should still be sitting in the back of the bus too, i bet."

When did this become a black issue? I'm no fan of Tiger as a golfer, couldn't care less about his colour.

Maybe people will someday realize that athletes, in any sport, are just people that can throw, catch, hit or kick a freaking ball better than the rest of us. One trick wonders.
Steroids, drugs, booze and infidelity are character flaws in any/all sports. To expect any more from these high profile people is just silly.
It seems NONE of them seem to realize they have the best jobs in the world, and abuse the "privilege" their alleged super star status has given them.
Get over it already. These are just humans, just like the rest of us. Stop making them idols and heroes and none of us will be disappointed with anything they do.

Lee - me thinks you don't have much of a historical perspective on golf. While no fan of Watson's - to say that he is known only as a senior golfer with little accomplishment is to ignore history. According to the records, Watson has won 8 majors (6th place all-time) - ahead of such names as Palmer, Snead, Trevino, Norman, Ballesteros, Faldo... As to Tiger's indiscretions - I agree, it is Tiger's business, but Watson has earned the right to comment on the impact to the game of Tiger's less than gentlemanly conduct between the ropes.

Again - couldn't care less about Tiger's skin colour. The history of the game is it's a genntleman's game played with very strict rules that are adhered (for the most part). I can't control that people over time did not allow others to play the game. As far as I can tell there is no rule in golf that says "whites only" Get over yourself already.

Maybe people will someday realize that athletes, in any sport, are just people that can throw, catch, hit or kick a freaking ball better than the rest of us. One trick wonders.

Here's the problem Lucky. You don't know him. Do you. So, how can you say that he was "living a Lie"? He has his own life to live and his own cross to bare. He's a golfer, not the Pope.

I wish everyone would move on. This is not our issue nor our business. AND there is not one of us that isnt guilty of at least something that others might find appalling. Mind your own business.....Tiger's shortfalls don't take away from yours and certainly you don't become a better person for judging him and pounding on him relentlessly.
Tiger, its too bad so many people are haters and judgemental. Deal with your issues, your way, and I look forward to seeing you golfing again......afterall that's the only thing I should care about since I don't know you or your beliefs or anything for that matter.

To Mom1010

Go Back to sleep deary. You obviously don't play golf, don't watch it on tv and probably are not over the age of 13. Before you show your ignorance, might try brushing up on your history, or maybe your really don't care and then my question is why waste your time with a meaningless post.

To BTop
It seems that you made this a black and white issue. However, your comments are applicable to not only golf, but about life in the United States and that is a sad commentary. I acknowledge that Tiger Woods at some point could be the greatest professional golfer in history, but he is not there, yet and if he does not get his act together, he may not make. Life on the tour will be much different when he returns. My bet is that he will be heckled unmercifly until he starts to will again and that can have a huge impact on his game. So, before you put him ahead of Bobby Jones and Jack Nicklaus, why not see how it plays out. Talk is cheap, but results pay the pipper.

Tom Watson has every right to express his opinion whether you agree with it or not. Who do you think is responsible for setting the stage for Tiger's success? Extraordinary golfers like Watson, Palmer and Nicklaus to name a few. To this day they continue to promote the game and do it with class and dignity. Tiger needs to suck it up, come clean and apologize to those people who once held him in such high regard. Only he can resolve the mess he's created.

Watson's wins were considered an "accomplishment" in the 19th CENTURY. This is the 21st Century and his 8 Majors doesn't mean much in the TIGER era.

Watson is NOT in Jack or Arnie's league!!! Watson was NEVER mentioned by sports writes whenever they write about the greatest golfers of our time, NEVER! Watson won a few (8) majors and to put him in the same category as Jack or Arnie is an INSULT in the highest form! Michelson, Els, Garcia can win 8 to 10 majors each in the Tiger era, but they will NEVER be considered to be in Tiger's league, NEVER!

So Watson was considered Number 1 for 4 years? I don't think that is something to brag about next to Tiger's record. And so after 4 years Watson went into OBLIVION. I think Watson should stay put in the SENIOR TOUR - that's where he belongs - BORING!!!

First of all I would like to chastise Andre for his ignorant self-serving response to "nofanoftiger"...There is no room for such poor decorum...This is not or never has been a racial issue....Get the "chip off of your shoulder"...Discuss posts intelligently, we will enjoy them more.
I am not a fan of Tom Watson, but, he certainly is the playing senior statesman for golf. He is still playing and protecting the integrity of the game of golf and, a fan favorite. I believe his interview was from his "head and heart", honest and refreshing. Tiger will be a better "man" if he digests these type of comments. Golf as a whole, not just the tour, needs Tiger. Non-playing fans were always fun to hear when they talked on Monday about Tigers exploits on the week-end. I have been playing golf for 55 years...This controversy
has done a dis-service to the game where players call penalties on ourselves. Tiger will learn a "hard lesson of life", and, he will
return a better "man" for it.

Throwing clubs and swearing isn't an issue??? This is golf, idiot, not pro basketball!!!!

Well said, Ward! You get it!!!!

Hello,

I have never posted to an article before. Yet, I love watching golf. The joy of the game, to me, is embodied in Jeff Maggert. He's classy, has a great swing, and cares deeply about his family. Wish I could see more of him on television. As for Tiger, there are many talented sports figures who are not the whole package. I find that Maggert is a fine golfer and a strong role model.I have never felt the same about Tiger.

Best wishes from sunny California.

Nancy

wow...cant believe the people in here turning this into a race issue and trying to discredit tom watson.

tiger is NOT the best golfer...PERIOD. he may have the potential to be the best golfer ever, but he certainly isnt the best golfer yet.

i actually could care less about the affairs and i think tiger is a great golfer. however, the older gentleman nofanoftiger is spot on in his judgement. we could do without the swearing and club throwing, its not a part of golf and shouldnt be a part of golf.

never once did nofan mention race....maybe the people who brought it up are a tad racist themselves

(and Watson only known as a senior golfer with very little accomplishment)? this guy doesn't know a thing about golf.

I for one think everyone should keep their opinions to themselves. Now if there is one of you who know exactly what happened speak up. there are so many different stories about what happened the night of Tigers accident speak your peace. The police that attended the wreck stated that Tiger had minor injury and he was not drunk or drinking. Now Tiger has swore on the golf course and he has thrown his clubs and this is disturbing to me as it is to the rest of you BUT HE ISN'T THE ONLY ONE.

next cheating on his wife is wrong and Tiger knows this and comfessed to it. But have any of you noticed how many whores came out of the wood work, WHY DO YOU THINK THEY ALL TURNED UP, MOOOOOOONEY. i WONDER HOW MANY GOLFERS HAS DONE THE SAME THING TIGER IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE DONE, BUT HAS GOTTEN AWAY WITH IT. I do hope that elin and tiger can work things out. I know Elin is smart enough to know that anytime someone is rich, popular that the media goes wild. THINK ABOUT IT ELIN. I DO HOPE YOU AND TIGER WILL HAVE A HAPPY LIFE TOGEATHER.

NOW WHY SHOULD HE EXPLAIN ANYTHING TO THE MEDIA, PEOPLE OR HIS GOLF BUDDIES. TIGER HAS PAID HIS DUES AND HE IS THE BEST GOLFER i HAVE SEEN IN MY LIFE TIME AND I AM 76 NOT A PUNK. THE PEOPLE PAY TO SEE HIM PLAY THEY DON'T NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HIS PERSONAL LIFE. THEY GETS THEIR MONEYS WORTH AND THE OTHER GOLFERS GET THEIR PAY BECAUSE OF TIGER, SO LIVE WITH IT.

He is better than the rest. This is about golf. The rest is his personal business and as such, should be out of bounds for the scum bag media. What Tiger did goes against some peoples moral values but it was not against the law. If it was most people in this world would be in jail. Of all the sanctimonious people out there that are condemming Tiger I bet 80% of them if they looked at there lives have cheated at one time or another.

Sunny California? A garbage can is floating down my street right now. Otherwise, good comment, Nancy!

wow lee, keep talking bud, sure good for a laugh that's for sure, too bad your momma never taught you to shut up when you have no idea what you are talking about, too funny

if ur a fan of "golf" than what could u possibly not like about Tigers' "game" is it his amazing stat of putting within 5', is it his shot making, is it his ability to almost never miss a cut, is it his ability to almost never choke a lead away, what? do u hear yourself,"gentlemans game" don't u realize what that phrase implies(to play this sport, u have to be a gentleman. to be excluded from this sport, u must not be a gentleman). Better yet, could u please explain to me what that actually mean.

Well, it's sunny from my front window. Thanks for the kind response. I teach online and many of my students find golf to be the inspiration for their own challenges...one person finding his or her own path. The game is a common link in so many of our conversations.

Nancy

Right On! Could not have said it any better!

Dude.... where have you been... Tiger swears constantly on the golf course....he is worse than Sailors on liberty....

Lee your knowledge of golf proceeds you.....(HA HA HA) you better look at Mr. Watsons' record (and era) in which he played. He is one of the greats that have played the game.

SO YOU ONLY WATCH GOLF WHEN TIGER ISN'T PLAYING. IS IT LIKE WATCHING THE NIKE TOUR? WE ALL WANT HIM BACK TO SEE THE BEST AT HIS SPORT PLAYING. THATS WHAT THE RATINGS SHOW

I never said I didn't like Tiger's game. I just don't like the way he conducts himself on the golf course. He is a great player and, as such, is a role model for every kid that watches him on TV. Golf is not a game where throwing clubs and swearing is a spectator sport.

And by gentleman I refer to a code of conduct of the course. Webster's dictionary defines "gentleman" as "thoughtful, polite, well mannered" and to that I would add somebody that plays with decorum. It's not Tiger's ability that I don't like, I don't like the childish behaviour that he sometimes displays. He needs to grow up.

Watch a Jeff Maggert or a Fred Couples or an Ernie Els. They go about their business in a quiet, diginifed manner. That, to me, is what golf is all about.

Whatever has happened within Tiger's private life, is between him, his wife and his God. It's not fir any of us to judge, whether we agree with his actions or not. He don't owe the public an explanation. He is a golfer not an elected official, and even then his personal life is his personal life. How about all the "holier than thou" individuals who want Tiger to come to you on hands and knees begging for forgiveness - try taking care of you and your business and making sure there are no skeletons in your closets. We have too many other things that are more important in this country than Tiger's affair. His affair have nothing to do with "golf", so please let it go.

Didn't he cheat on his wife with another golfers' wife? i'm just saying..........

Dude, are you for real? Watson with little accomplishment???

He may be the third best golfer of all time. Won tons of majors.

Hypocritical given his affair, that I do concede.

Andre, "a gentleman's game" means you learn to act like a gentleman on the course. It has nothing at all to do with your family background or wealth but everything to do with learning to handle good and bad results with equal grace. My grandfather came from a poor background, but he loved the game and taught me to do so. He had a temper he had learned to control, and he knew I had a temper as well. If I threw a club when playing with him, he would quietly tell me, "If you do that again, young man, we're going straight home." I knew he meant it. I agree the what Tiger does off the course is only for him and Elin to deal with, but long before this story I remember thinking that Tiger would be better off abiding by my grandfather's rule.

Prior to Tiger there was drama during major tournaments. My favourite thing about watching golf on TV was to have two golfers duelling it out, with the last twosome walking up 18 and either one having a chance to win the tournament. It kept me glued to my seat because there were times when I didn't know who was going to win until the last putt dropped. TV loves drama and so do I.

With Tiger playing there is no drama. If he plays there is a very good chance he's going to win. I don't enjoy watching what, to me, is almost always a forgone conclusion. Tiger and his great ability equals no drama. No drama for me means I can find something else to do. Look at baseball - would you rather watch the Yankess and Red Sox duke it out or one of them play some bottom feeder club? I love the Red Sox and I'll watch them play the Yankees every time because I love the drama.

Now we are getting somewhere. so, if he "grows up" if he comes back on tour, then are u saying that u will watch golf "when Tiger plays"?

Oh, where to start..............There is NO ONE in the game of golf that is classier or nicer to his fans than Tom Watson. I know this first hand. I have been following him since 1974 and I have never seen him throw a club or swear. He always had a smile and time for an autograph for me. You cannot compare one to the other. One affair vs. at last count 14?? Tiger's actions were deplorable. Golf is a gentlemens game and Tiger is no gentleman. The man has even arrived at golf courses in a helicopter. Really Tiger, a helicopter. The greats of the game don't do that. Let's talk about the tantrums on the course. Throwing clubs, swearing and denying interviews just because he had a bad day. He behaves like a toddler having a temper tantrum. The life lessons that you learn from golf, such as sportsmanship, have been lost on Tiger. Just because you win many tournaments does not make you invincible. Tom is 100 percent correct in his assessment!!!!! Humility would go a long way on the road back to recovery. Though some golfers have remained mum kudos for Tom for telling it like it is. A legend encompasses more than just how many wins. It is about respect for the game, the players and the fans. NO ONE fits that description more than Tom, and I was lucky enough to get to know him. I am proud to be a fan of his and fortunate enough to witness some of the greatest moments in golf. Thanks Tom for being who you are and standing up for what you believe in. YOU are a true legend!

I hear what all you non Tiger fans are saying about Tom Watson's right to give his opinion on Tiger's behavior. My question is why must Tom make these comments about Tiger now. Why couldn't Tom be man enough to make these comments last year before Tiger was exposed. I will tell you why, because to do so then was not popular. Now you can really express your hate for a person of Tigers statue without standing out like a sore thumb. All of these golfers whom come out to rip Tiger for indiscetions never liked Tiger from the beginning. This is not about swearing, throwing clubs, or cheating, its simply about the fact Tiger is and will be the Greatest golfer to ever play the game and some people can't handle it. Tom, man-up. You know that Tiger has this game on lock and there is nothing that you can do about it. So take your cheap shots now because when he comes back you will all pay. All of Tiger's so called peers whom have come out to attack him for his mistakes have only given him a new focus to really whip that ASS on the course. Good Luck!

"Watch a Jeff Maggert or a Fred Couples or an Ernie Els. They go about their business in a quiet, diginifed manner. That, to me, is what golf is all about."

Enough said.

I may not be as savvy as you are about golf, but I understand golf enough to know what the game is about - WINNING!!!

Why do you think Tiger is chasing Jack'records, NOT Watson's? If Watson's record is so phenomenal, why isn't everyone chasing his record, instead of Jack's?

So, ru saying that Tiger shouldn't play golf until he learns how to act like a gentlmen? Even though his "game" is clearly better than everyone on tour? wait, didn't mean to infer...Do u think Tiger has the best "game on tour"

"It's bad for our game". I'm sure Elin was worried about the game as well Watson,,,,,,,,

What Tiger did has nothing to do with Golf, it has to do with his family, which is none of our business, his private life is just that. I don't know who decided this is public business, Gossip magazines, TMZ , entertainment tonight and the rest.

I hope he retires, maybe the other Golfers would love that.

I agree John Daley is a better role model.
I;am a good friend of his, my name is
Jack Daniels.

Chastise me? ru serious? ok, i'm sorry. the next time i want to post, i'll ask u first. how's that!. lol

Watson won, what, eight majors? He almost won his 9th at age 59 last summer. So when Lee says "Watson is only known as a senior golfer with very little accomplishment" that should read "I, Lee, don't know anything about what happened in the game of golf before 1995."

But Lee, in the age of google, that is not very excuseable. Here, let me help you: http://tinyurl.com/ybhcy7w

Last I checked, you don't have to "earn your right to express an opinion". Whether or not you agree or disagree with Tom Watson is up to you. I think his success on the PGA tour says that most people are interested in what he has to say. Obviously Lee doesn't understand or know golf, or he wouldn't have said that Watson is not accomplished. That's just ignorant. Tiger screwed up, but he is still going to whip some a$$ on the course - make that all of the courses. Now he doesn't have anything to hide (most likely), so he may even play better!

This is the best comment that I have read on this subject. Thank you for being able to put in words, what I could only think. I, too, am a Tiger fan. I appreciate his golf, and couldn't care less about his private life.

wait a minute, now it sounds like all that "this is a gentlemens sport" was BS. u don't like Tiger cause he's better than evryone else. ok, now i got it.

people need to mind thier own buisness what tiger did wasn t right to his family but that is for him and his family to work out not the public, people need to get their own life.

people need to mind thier own buisness what tiger did wasn t right to his family but that is for him and his family to work out not the public, people need to get their own life.

I think that was the best post PERIOD. Very real comment.

Tiger is the one person who in his position should not use the "F" word time after time on the course. His behavior is pathetic, is it ok with you to have him project this attitude to the hundreds of thousands of young people who look up to him. It disgusts me that you feel its ok for him to behave this way. Every other sport has been over run by individuals with just this type of attitude. Its not OK golf should remain a sport of respect its not street ball........

Hey Lee, why don't you ask Jack or Arnie about how they view Tom Watson, since you seem to know everything. By the way, both are on record in numerous interviews as including him as one of the best golfers in history and certainly their peer. The fact is nobody cares what you think because you obviously have a burr in your bonnet about something. It's obvious that you don't know or appreciate anyting about the history of golf. It is also apparent that the only thing in life you value is WINNING. However, as in any game or in life, it's not so much about what you won as how you won and how you were viewed by your peers. Unlike your BS, I prefer to get my opinions from people who actually played against the man and those people have an extremely high opinion of Watson's rightful place in golf history. I bet you think Bobby Jones was a hack because he played 50 years ago. However, if your into winning as much as you seem to be, no ones has accomplished Jones's grand slam and my guess is that nobody will. Just remember that without history, we have no basis to compare one player to another. Do us all a favor and learn a little golf history before you start bashing older players.

The only thing you seem to be good at is putting words in peoples mouths. Just because I don't like Tiger's behaviour on the golf course does not mean that I don't think he's a terrific golfer. Let's be clear - he has a great game and will probably smash every record there is by the time he retires. But I have the right to not like the way he conducts himself on a golf course and I have the right to express my opinion. For me, an old geezer who loves the game, he does not represent what I think golf is all about. You can muddle that up anyway you want but my opinion is my opinion. I have yet to see an opinion from you, all I see you doing is picking apart every one elses. To quote "I Am Providence" I think you're an idiot!

See, I don't think of golf as a sport. No offense, no defense - not a sport. I look at it as a skill. Tiger is the MOST skilled at golf. He is emotional, and I think that is good for golf. I have watched golf all my life, I enjoy it, and I can guarantee you if they had mikes on the older players in their younger days, you would have heard much the same. Cussing, throwing clubs, and yes, breaking clubs have been around a long time. What hasn't been around is high definition close ups, and mikes. I think Tiger has humanized the "sport" and because of him it is more exciting!! Golf will suffer until he comes back.

huh? i'm an idiot? now, that wasn't nice. :o(

No one questions Tiger's ability Cathy. We all appreciate what he can do with a golf club in his hand. Are you implying that what he does privately is fine with you even if it includes cheating repeatedly on his beautiful wife and two small children? I guess it's O.K. to have no moral values in your part of the country.

My last post was in response to Andre.

Ward, it is nice to think you know what is acceptable in "my part of the country", or would know where my part of the country is. I am just saying that what Tiger does is not any of my business. Although you seem to have an intimate knowledge of his "beautiful wife and two small children", I do not. I do not know, nor do I have a right to know what goes on in his marriage. In my part of the country, we try not to judge. Tiger's golf speaks for itself. I say we concentrate on our own relationships, and allow Tiger to do the same.

I can vouch for the fact that Andre is not an idiot. Hope this clears things up.

Everybody should chill. I have never participated in this kind of exchange, but feel I should . I m a psychiatrist and I have taken time to read everybodys commentary.
There is no racial tone to anybodys comment but it is not unusual for a racially sensitive person to pick wrong vibes.
Tom Watson by all definition is a great golfer in any century. He has earned the right to pass a comment, but probably not the right to be judgemental ( that should be said in private ). Tiger is an asset to every golfer today active and inactive, overall he makes the game exiting. Any follower justifiably should be upset with his carelessness ( yes even if you are guilty of same missdid yourself ).
Tiger is not the BEST GOLFER EVER, but I am very sure he will meet that target even if he lost a leg.
I can understand how his tantrums can be viewed as " not good for the game ", I agree, swearing and throwing clubs are not my image of golf growing up ( I am 44 ). He brings an interesting twist to the game that seems to be in line with general behaviour these days. While I find it offensive it does not taint on my impression of his perfection. Yes I can understand how someone can be turned off by his tantrums but it is certainly not the majority.
"Yes" celebrations on the golf course as now so " Tigeress ", almost like it is a macho thing. But maybe its the next generation.
I hope this helps you all. And "yes" for the record " I AM BLACK ".
Enjoy the game.

wow, u guys are really sensitive. ok, my opinion, here goes. i think that the creators of the game of golf had a an idea about "there" game and how it should be played and who should be allowed to play in it.all that was fine and good until Charlie Sifford, the first approved black man allowed to play on the tour, won his first major. Since he was "allowed" to play, there have been many others since. Yet, the best of them all (in my opinion) is a young, club throwing, cussing, 34yr. old name Tiger Woods who started kicking butt and taking names. now, this didn't please those who thought that there was no place for that(not the cussing, or club throwing, but the butt kicking that this young black man)was giving all these "other" golfers. Now, in 2010, there are still some of those "others" (tom watson, nofanoftiger, and I Am Providence)who still feel that way today. Just the opinion of one idiot! :O)

What Tiger does is a matter of public record. My intimate knowledge of Tiger's wife and children is nothing more than the countless number of times I've seen them on television, magazines and the web. Tiger has openly admitted his indiscretions. I am very dissapointed by his behavior and I think he's let many people down - first and foremost his family. I can't blindly worship a man I can't totally respect.

Tommie needs to stick to playing golf and STFU about others..

He surely doesn't want to open HIS closet... he has enough skeletons to choke a maggot..

Lee, the Tiger apologist, maybe you should read some background on Tom Watson before calling a little-accomplished Senior Golfer. Try defending your guy with facts not only about him, but about those you chastise. Tom Watson was the eminent golfer from 1977 - 1983, a fact that everyone in golf will agree to. The reason you are getting blasted is because of your ridiculous comments on him, because I agree that no one should make "holier than thou" comments unless they are clean, like Republicans calling out Bill Clinton then resigning due to infidelities as well.

thanks rick!(i hope that wasn't sarcasm on your part)lol!

And who the hell cares about Watson's opinion. I want to see if he get golf's rating and attendance up by his playing. Does his opinion matters? I don't care if Tiger's private life is splash on the tabloid everyday. It does not matter to me. Every tabloid newspaper puts it there and makes money out of it. Is it true or accurate? Who cares? I don't care about his private life too, I just want to watch him play. And I am not a fan of golf per se, I am a fan of Tiger. Okay?

I now apologize to Lee, even though he was off base, because Mom 1010 and BTop may be the stupides people I have ever come accross on a blog like this. Reading your comments, you neither golf nor are reading the article other than to pull the race card or not have a clue who one of the game's finest champions, ambassadors and a Hall of Famer is. Go back to watching Geraldo.

Wow - you still don't get it yourself. Don't care about Tiger's colour, don't care about anybody's colour, never have never will. All I am discussing here is his behahviour on the golf course, behaviour that is being copied by a lot of kids today.

I'm tired now, I'm going to make myself a nice cup of tea, turn on my TV and watch the San Diego Open where some very good golfers are plying their trade.

Ward, I am not blindly worshipping Tiger, but, I am not disappointed by his behavior either. He plays no role in my life, and therefore cannot disappoint me. I am not invested in his transgressions, and he owes me no apology. He is a human, a golfer, and not anything else to me. I enjoy watching him play, and do not entertain an opinion on a marriage of which I know nothing, other that the what the rags have said. He didn't have to admit to anything to me, and his private life should be just that HIS PRIVATE LIFE. I think we just disagree.

enjoyed the comments. take care.:O)

better enjoy those "good" golfers while u can, cause we know what happens if Tiger comes back........ u won't be watching! :O)

Yes, he almost has his 9th major at the age of 59. How is that compared to 14 at the age of 32? ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most of you guys seem to just disregard and gnore WATSON's own infidelity and instead hammer Tiger for his infidelity. At least, Tiger can say he screwed up a lot of unmarried floosies. Watson can't say the same thing - he SCREWED UP another golfer's wife (while he was married) which lead to is divorce. So who's talking now about INTEGRITY!

Amen Tom, probably the only good thing to come out of this entire mess is people will stop treating him as if he were untouchable and call him out on his childish behavior. Cursing and club throwing are exceptionally immature behaviors and should never have been tolerated or used as evidence of his ultra competitiveness. Arnie, Trevino, watson and especially Jack were extremely competitive players, but they combined it with class, which is one thing Tiger obvoiusly does not have nearly enough of.

Nofanoftiger, sorry, but I agreed with you, until you commented because he always wins. That's stupid. He and Bob May in the 2000 PGA wasn't drama? Rocco Mediate in 2008 Open? Phil at Doral twice? Don't get suckered in by racists and unknowing bloggers - stick to your opinion, which you are entitled to, which is clean up your act ON the course Tiger. Fans, including me, have already forgiven what he did in his life. As someone posted, its not my issue its his to deal with between his wife, his kids later on, and God ultimately.

The only person Tiger Woods needs to please and make amends with is his wife. Not any of his golf peers or the so called fans. I was always taught to mind my own business. Tiger's actions have no impact on any of us. Let his wife worry about Tiger. Everyone has an opinion, until we run into our own demons. None of us are perfect, Tom Watson, included. If you enjoy the game of golf you will continue to enjoy it... with or without Tiger. I do not condone what Tiger did, but Tiger did it and Tiger has to live with it. Not anyone of us. Bottom line the guy can play golf. At the end of the day, that's why we like or dislike Tiger. I have always taught my kids to do the right thing. As parents that is all we can do. Teach our kids and hope that they will remember and listen. Tiger Woods and no other person will have a greater influence over my kids, so I really do not care what he did in his private life. Just saying... Mind your own business.

If you just try to check the data as to who are the best golfers in history, Watson's name is NOT even in the top ten!

Granted, Watson is a good golfer. BUT HE IS NOWHERE NEAR THE TALENT OF NICKLAUS, PALMER OR WOODS!!!

Tom -- Come On ! You've got to be kidding ! His swearing, his club throwing ?

I think we're getting closer Cathy. Tiger openly admitted to his indiscretions. The "rags" simply jumped on the opportunity to sell more trash. Sadly, you can't be ranked the number one golfer in the world, have a net worth of a billion dolars and lead a private life, let alone a normal life. I'm bothered that his actions outside the world golf have no effect on you whatsover.

Good for Watson to say in public what the networks stopped showing years ago but everyone knew all to well!

An arrogant, 'I'm better than everyone and bigger than the game itself' rich punk who likes to swear and throw clubs! Read the Rules of Golf, Section One: Etiquette; 'all players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times'! I wish one of his opponents will have the fortitude to call over a local official when TW swears or throws a club and gives him a warning first then a two stroke penalty if the behavior persists.

Since the game has revolved around TW, it is up to the rest of the PGA players to follow the Rules of Golf and exercise them accordingly.

Why should the public not care about Tiger's personal life? Tiger is a public figure. Everyone that says they don't care about his personal life but only care about his golfing is lying. What if Tiger molested children (wacko jacko) or killed animals (michael vick) or killed somebody (ted kennedy)?? Would you all still not care about his personal life then?? Why is it ok to live two different lives, one on the course and one off? You people only like Tiger still because he didnt harm children or kill anything.

Here we go agan another person saying what Tiger ought to do--whatever!!!!

HATERS--Tiger is untouchable!!!!!!!!!

You have not seen Ernie throw a club after a bad shot & almost killed someone nearby...

I don't want people in my personal life, in fact I get down right put off by it; therefore, I don't get involved in the lives of others--none of my business. Some people are just nosy busybodies with boring lives that's why they gossip and keep drama in their lives--sad for them.

I have not seen anyone play as well as Tiger either so Mitchin what is the purpose of your comment.

I can't believe you are comparing Tiger's infidelity, "against his wife", with child molestation or the killing of another human being. That satement is what is Idiotic, not Tiger. As far as Tiger, I don't know him and don't really care to ever meet him. I will still watch him play golf. The fact that he is in the public eye, is the only reason this is even a story to some people. People who choose to live their own lives, don't care. You may not be a public figure but I bet there is someone who knows a secret about you. Should any of us care?

I would love to meet Tiger not my business who he beds and I imagine the only person who should care is his wife.

Tiger invited everyone's judgment when he put his face in front of the world, advertising countless products and services. If he had wanted to be a private person, he could have chosen a different profession, or golfed without making all the endorsements. But he instead chose in effect to say "I am a high-quality person whose opinion you should trust on cars/consulting/athletic wear/etc."

If he wanted to be spared the Court of Public Opinion, he shouldn't have admitted himself into evidence.

Watson is showing his jealousy and immaturity! It is non of his business how Tiger acts or what Tiger does. Watson needs to mind his own business. I just lost what little respect I have for him.

I agree 100%, the truly great players played with the same intensity but with a gentlemen's honor and class. Arnie, Jack, Trevino, Player, Casper, Watson, Weiskopf, Seve, Littler and add to that list Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead. Oh I didn't mention Miller because after the '73 Open at Oakmont he thought himself bigger than most. Look at how soon after he flamed out!

Ward, don't be bothered by that, because we don't "really know" what his actions are, then or now. What I feel is real sadness that he and his lovely wife don't have the opportunity to work this through without the priviledge of our opinions. You will have to trust me when I tell you I have very high moral standards for myself, and if I was married to him, may have a different opinion of what his actions had on my life; but, I am not. I try not to judge, it is part of my religious upbringing. I try to show compassion, and all I ask is that rather than condemn try to do the same.

No, I save the sarcasm for the posts.

Interesting rant, but to call Tom Watson a "senior golfer with very little accomplishment" reduces your credibility to less than zip. When you have won five British Opens, not to mention his other major championships, you have had a career which will be talked about as long as there is a game of golf.

Cheetah Woods is nothing but a great golfer and womanizing scumbag
I relish the badgering he will get when he cheats his way out of rehab back to the Masters
Tom Watson has my utmost respect and admiration

whether or not you agree with tom watson's opinion - he is most definitely free to express it - just like the 106 people above have expressed their opinions.

give it a rest folks.

The longer Tiger stays away the less money the tour will have and everyone makes less.

The golfers could care less about Tiger the man, he has caused them trouble with money now available and maybe at home with the wives who are asking what are you doing when your not on the course.

Tom Watson should be very careful where he is throwing stones. This is a man who was an alcoholic who gave up drinking and more than likely was cheating on his first wife with another golfer's wife. Coincidentally, his second wife was married to another Watson--Denis--another pro golfer. As for Tiger and his swearing and club throwing--give me a break!! I have seen countless other golfers do the same thing. The only reason we see it more from Tiger is ---DRUM ROLL PLEASE--he is the number one golfer in the world and he gets the most camera time. As a percentage, I don't believe he swears any more than any other golfer nor does he throw his clubs anymore often. He is just captured on camera anytime it happens! I personally think all the golf pros need to keep their mouths shut or it may come back to haunt them!!

Did you watch the US Open or any of the east coast tournaments this past year? The fan conduct that is now allowed is unbelieveable but indicative of the times we live in. The PGA wants the public more involved in order to keep the bucks flowing. Golfers are starting to reflect this "new world" and it is only going to get worse! Tiger rules the golf world and the people dictate the new terms. Don't be surprised when Tiger bellows and acts up on the course...the people LOVE the drama and the screaming and the organized cheers. You can't hate one without hating it all. Golf used to be a wonderfully sedate, refined, and respectable game...but boring doesn't bring in the bucks for ALL the golfers.

Watson should have waited for Tiger to do whatever mea culpa he AND HIS TEAM decides is best rather than anticipate insensitivity and arrogance in advance. Watson HAS earned the right to speak directly to Tiger...but to share this with the world is not right. If you want respect you must be willing to give respect.

Why don't you wait until you have finished the ninth grade and have learned a little bit about common courtesy?

How do you show humility? Is it a certain look? I thought it was a matter of the heart? Mr. Watson (I presume) has never "transgressed."

Good Going TOM. About time someone who help build golf to what it is today speaks up and too bad all these low life Tiger Fans dont get it.

Alot of good hard decent people built an individual sport and it only took 1 to give it a BLACK EYE. Is it your all Tiger fans and not a fan of golf, think about it. Tiger is nothing more than a spoiled rich BRAT, he may have not come up that way, but he sure has learned how to turn his nose up in the air.

On your comment "you don't know him". I was actually waiting for this one Shanta because I actually do know Tiger. I am a retired Naval Officer that played in a weeekend foursome for a couple of years with his dad Earl and a couple of other retired military guys at Los Alamitos Navy Golf Course. I had the pleasure of playing golf with the teenage Tiger several times and watching extensive interaction between Earl and Tiger. Being a friend and fan of Tiger's still does not keep me from being extremely disappointed in his off-course behavior and highly encouraging him and any other young PGA golfer to heed the advice of a great gentleman like Tom Watson.

Watson - only a senior golfer with little accomplishments? You have just exhibited your total lack of knowledge concerning golf...

Tom Watson is a pathetic bozo who doesn't have his own house in order. I am wondering if perhaps there is not a tinge of racism in his attacks. As far as humility, Tiger is more than humble when you consider he is the greatest golfer that has ever lived. The watson types who are playing suckup are jealous and are in the attack mode.

Mr. Benoit, that post was from a comment by Lee, not me. See blog entry No. 5 please.

Give it up everyone. Let's just enjoy golf. Do you want everyone to check into all of your closets? NO ONE IS PERFECT ! ! !

Watson is just like many of Tiger's peers, things they are saying now they wanted to say years ago when this young black man came into their game (white man's)and made them look silly, now that he has had some problems it's open the door for them to say and react the way they truely are, racial.

This whole debacle is way past pathetic. 1 out of 2 marriages end in divorce and lord knows how much infidelity occurs outside those marriages. So Tiger's indiscretions are not a surprise. What is so amazing that he had so much to lose. If we were talking about some PGA player who is ranked above 130 on the money list, this would of been squashed right away. Leave it alone.

FINALLY! Someone nailed this subject right on the money....thank you!

Frankly, I don't really think Tiger's behavior on or off the course has hurt the PGA, or it's image. Professional athletes, actors, famous artists and musicians...many of these people in the public spotlight have displayed less than perfect behavior, some very outrageously. That he has hurt his own image is surely a fact for Tiger...and yet we've seen an actor jailed for domestic abuse win emmys, and who ever mentions his several incidents any longer. And the list of similar situations is long, so bit deal...somebody famous made a bad mistake. How has this hurt the PGA? Give me a break, let people be human...to err is certainly human. To forgive? It's a no-brainer.

Watson couldn't carry Tiger's jock strap. Old white man pent up jealousy coming out when it had cover in Tiger's latest disclosures. However, all those old white guys and allot of current so called rivals, have been seathing green with envy about Tigaer ever since he started showing them what a real superstar galofer can do. It's very sad that Tiger has these other problems, but I think he has otherwise lived a good professional life and has certantly given to charitable cause far mor than any of his predissesors or contemporaries. Hell, without Tiger ever being in the picture, gold would have possibly gone bancrupt due to people not having a true chaaaapion to root for, and half the guys on the tour would have to work second jobs to stay afloat.

I hope he comes back to the Masters and wins it big and I hope he never stoops to having to explain or apologize for his personal life, to anyone other than his family. All the other know it all peepsters ought to mind their own buisness.

Hey tom waston the bible says let he with out sin cast the first stone.no one is perfect and you sure not ,how can you called out some one when you had an affair with a married woman and end in your divorced.oh i guess you for gotten about how you commented adultery so maybe you Tom should stay in your senior place and enjoy your older players cause you can't ever wear Mr. Tiger Woods shoes or even carry his golf bag (and that's a wrap.

Tiger is a sick man. If people would just take their minds off of the SEX part and look at the reality. Sex addiction is REAL! He is trying to be rehabilitated and trying to save his marriage. He needs time not criticism. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but to go out there publicly is cruel. Michaelson is one of his best friends and is continuing to show him respect. All of this negativity can't be helping. He is well aware how much he means to golf and his fans. Knowing he let them and most of all his wife, mother and family down, doesn't make it easy. I, for one, would like to say to Tiger, I know this is the hardest thing you have ever done, but YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Hey Andre, Tiger's not black. He's an alphabeticanasian. Just ask him. He won't even own up to being black. Just ask him.

Andre,

The older gentleman from Britain was right. The game of golf - both on the tour and for rank amateurs - has suffered because of the behavior people display when they play. When I was a teen, my dad and I played with a neighbor on weekends. He stopped playing with us because of my behavior. As a teenager, I had no right to subject somebody else to my boorish behavior; it was rude and demonstrated poor sportsmanship. Tiger isn't a teen; he's a thirty four year old professional. He should act the way my father and our neighbor expected me to act when I was in high school.

Golf isn't like bball or football or even baseball; there are rules to follow. On most courses you even have to dress properly;
for men that means wearing khakis and a colored shirt. At one time you even had to wear a tie. You don't have to be rich to play the game, because there are plenty of wealthy folks who act like slobs and plenty of poor people who act like royalty. Tiger should respect the traditions of the game and act with the knowledge that, one day, he will be an elder statesman and an ambassador for the sport.

I meant "collared" shirt, not "colored" shirt.

Everyone can come to Tigers defense but the bottom line is he hurt Elin & those two beautiful children for no other reason then self gratification. Just because he is rich, talented & powerful doesn't omit his untrustworthy behavior. Elin trusted him & he betrayed that trust. It doesn't matter who the hell he is because as far as I'm concerned he is a slime ball. Excuse me, he is a rich, talented & powerful slime ball.

It is time to leave Tiger alone. It is his private life. He was one that he was cought but many of his "friends" were not

What rock did you crawl out from?

Check the record books -- you realize Watson has accomplished much.

Yes Watson may not be holier than thou.....but I guarantee you Tiger is a tool.

You have to respect Tom Watson for standing up and telling the truth about Tiger and his bad conduct on and off the course. It makes you wonder why Jack Nicklaus didn't step up and tell it like it is!

It's never a good idea to give your opinion of someone or their actions. I'm sure Mr. Watson would normally have not done that but people tend to speak their mind and be more opinionated when they age.

I think that what is missing from these posts is the underlying problem and what Mr. Watson is really speaking about. Golf is a game of integrity that not only resides on the course but off as well. Mr. Woods' acknowledged infidelities and the audio evidence that he tried to cover it up brings into light the lengths that he will go to continue a deceit.

J.P. Hayes disqualified himself after earning his Q-school card for 2009 when he realized he had played an unsanctioned ball for one hole whereby he subsequently lost his tour card for a year. Is that something Mr. Woods could do? Especially with all those corporate sponsors demanding a good return on their investment? That's where integrity and the problem with rampant infidelity collide.

Philosophy 101
If your grand father does not win majors, has not raised the level of the game
If the PGA tours like serial winners, not epitomised grand parents.
If everyone want top golfers to follow their grand fathers,
Then all grand fathers will be on the pitch, not greats like Tigers.
You can hide under the guise,"i have a right to my own opinion" but think about it, who is your grand father among millions of golf grand fathers, if Tiger played like your grand father did, he may never come out of the Woods.

Tom Watson is a jealous old man. Tiger is the world's best golfer. Getr over it, Tom.

Btw, Tiger is only sorry that he was caught. I'm sure all other athletes (past & present) carry the same attitude.

Tiger crucified himself. Can you spell stupid?

Come on Tom, old boy. You've had your ups and downs over the years with other golfers, news media personnel and the like, so give it a rest. We (the public) really don't care what you say in the name of golf. I know you missed you only chance of winning "The Open" again, but don't take it out on others.
Enjoy your game and hope those old putting problems don't pop up again so you will at least be in the top 100 of the Champions league.

Because Jack Niclaus does not need attention like Tom Watson.... If Tom said this when Tiger has no scandal.. then he is for real.
Not when Tiger is limping in the open.

I suppose I am one of those few that can say that I'm a fan of both Tiger and Watson. Watson was a premier player for many years and now Tiger is among one of the greatest as far as accomplishments. They both made horrible personal decisions that brought shame upon them, with Tigers indescretions being more notable but it still doesn't take away what they've done out on the playing field.

The two players are from two different eras so you cannot completely compare them with either other 100% but in a lot of ways they're similar - with life as with golf. I sincerely hope that Tiger can come back to greatness but with such an incredible bright spotlight I think he needs to do his best to truly act as a role model to his fans and younger players. I wish the best for him, his wife, and children.

People underestimate how fame can cause mental problems. His anger, swearing on the course may reflect the conflicted feelings from his private actions.

Sex addiction I don't know.

Feel sorry for his wife, her suffering is public, painful and money is cold comfort for an injured psyche.

Whacking a round ball from tee to green is not high moral ground. It is a game humans make mistakes. No person in history has had the media coverage Tiger has received.

Forgiveness is good for your soul.

While Tom Watson has every right to tell his opinion regarding Tiger, I don't think this is the time to criticize Tiger for cursing on the golf course. Let's be honest. This is all about Tiger's affairs, not his display of anger on the course. I am a big fan of Tiger and was very disappointed in his behavior. However, I do think Tiger has been punished plenty for his actions.

When you get down to it, the number of women that he slept with doesn't lessen his accomplishments on the golf course. Do people think that Wilt Chamberlain or Magic Johnson were any lesser of a basketball players because they slept with hundreds or thousands of women? What about Babe Ruth?!

I can tell you one thing. When Tiger gets back on the course, he has plenty of bulletin board material to motivate him.

By the way, here's an interesting article about Mr. Watson:
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4156/is_19990711/ai_n13941684/

I can't believe the idiots on here who do not know what a great golfer Tom Watson was.

Learn something about the history of golf before you mouth off and show your ignorance.

Tom Watson has 8 majors only 5 playes in the history of golf have more. He also has more then 50 victories world wide.

Did he have personal problems also, sure but they were not 15 indiscretions or more.

He also never threw a club or swore on the golf course, unlike Tiger who does it over and over again. He is not a good example for young golfers.

Tiger also is a disgrace in how he treats fans. He almost never signs an autograph.

He needs to realize like Palmer,Nickalus, Player , Trevino ,Watson etc, that he makes 0$ except for the people who pay his salary. The people who watch golf, buy tickets , buy his endorsed products etc etc etc are responsible for him making a Billion Dollars.

Without them he is just playing a great game for free!!!!

Tiger is finished !

You are taking these coments kind of personal, ha sport. And then you proceed to do the same thing to Tom Watson that you are mad about. What a hypocrate you are sir. As far as Tom being a "seinor golfer" come on man! How old are you? Check your history. WOW.

Woods throwing his clubs, having meltdowns and tantrums on the tee, swearing, they have always been issues, but too many people, fans and media, have turned a blind eye.

I have to agreed with Tom, that should and will stop. Give Tiger some credit, His Mother is the Leading Figure in his life now and I don't think she will put up with it. Pops taught him how to play golf and his Mother in my opinion took a back seat at some point. Life will humble you and that's what happened, now he should move under the guidance of the real Tiger/Mom.

Tom you are a class act. I hope you have a big enough pile of stones to throw. Oh, Tom wipe than chocolate off your nose.

(and Watson only known as a senior golfer with very little accomplishment)

This comment alone shows you haven't clue what you are talking about. Tom Watson is hardly a "senior golfer with very little accomplishment". Tom Watson has won 8 majors in his career, including 5 British Opens, 2 Masters, and 1 US Open. That puts him 6th on the all time list of Major Championship winners.

Yes, I know, Tiger has more, I'm taking anything away from his golfing accomplishments. But to suggest that Tom Watson, who at 59 last year nearly won the British Open for a 6th time, has accomplished little in his golf career is absurd!

Frankly, I thought Mr. Watson's comments were respectful and dead on the mark with respect to Tiger. Especially the comment about Tiger's swearing and temper tantrums on the course. I've heard a number of commentators remark on the inappropriateness of his slamming clubs into the ground after a poor shot. Holding himself to a high standard is one thing, but Tiger has to remember, fairly or not, that he's a roll model for many kids for his accomplishments. Showing poor sportsmanship is NOT being a good role model.

Most sensible post so far. Tiger's made some $800 mil in public endorsements by projecting an image of perfection - with his golf and his life. Golf is a game of honor, and Tiger has none.

Beautifully said - every word.

Tiger is the most talented golfer I have ever seen, but the title of "Greatest of All Time" still belongs to Jack, at least at this time.

As far as Watson goes, he is respected by his peers and he is correct as far as Tiger showing a little humility and improving his behavior on the course. That Tiger let himself think he was immune to the same rules of conduct all married people are subject to is not surprising. He was making more money than imaginable at a very youmg age and could buy anything he wanted. He also has/had the pressure of being expected to win every time he stepped on the course, second was as bad as missing the cut. I don't think even Jack or Arnie were expected to win every tournament. This isn't an excuse for his actions, but these factors may help explain some of them. Maybe he should have a long visit with Lebron and learn how to handle the pressure put on someone at such an early age.

Tiger is a foul mouthed punk. I hope he never comes back. He doesn't deserve to shine Jack's shoes. As always, Tom Watson is being a gentleman.

Tiger Woods is a human being something a lot of people seem to have forgotten, we make bad decisions, we live, we learn hopefully to do better in the future.. His wife is not the first to have her famous spouse cheat on her but the public especially Mr. Watson is making a big deal because he probably feels Tiger was lucky to nab the white Babysitter to start with. Get over it Elin you've got acess to enough money to live long and happy.....

You're comparing Watson's one love affair to Tiger's skank of the week parade? Hopefully, Elin's tests all came back negative. Too bad she wasn't more adept with the old nine iron. She probably needs to work on her grip. I wonder what kind of grooves that club had? Of course, our entire society has devolved into a troglodyte rabble, devoid of class, howling its drunken approval for the win-at-all-costs mentality only to finally turn on even its heroes, devouring them as well. Tiger, with his foul-mouthed, ill mannered narcissism is an apt personification of such times, where stupified drunks line the fairways shouting, "You da man!" Watson comes from a bygone era where class and sportsmanship mattered. I hung up the golf clubs after thirty years. Better to live with the wonderful memories of enjoyable times on the links than to try to continue playing during the decline of the sport brought about by the "Tiger era."

You clearly don't understand the game of golf and especially so at a professional level. You are not suppose to be cursing or throwing golf clubs. That fact that it is tolerated by the PGA is absurd just because it is Tiger Woods.

His personal behavior is a reflection of his behavior on the course - out of bounds.

Is he a great golfer - yes the greatest. Is he a great human being? Tim will tell.

I love Golf! Always have, still do.

Does Tiger love the game? Of course..the man would cheat on his wife before he would cheat at the game. He expected more of himself as a golfer than he did as husband. That's a little messed up, but he loves the game.
Watson can say what he wants, he's earned it. Nothing wrong with it. He loves the game.
To those who are a bit younger, us "older" golfers love the game because its the only sport you can take with you. From when you start till the day you die.(Please see Bing Crosby). And, its the only sport where you can compete on championship conditions.

Is the game better or worse now? Its called golf for a reason. SH$T was already taken. Same game and people.

Without Tiger golf would still be a boring, whispering 3rd tier sport that no one other than 50 plus yr olds would bother being interested in. He's brought the sport to an entirely different level and if anyone questions that, then they have issues other than golf and his indiscretions. It's easier pointing out personal behavior of others than shining a light on the deep seeded prejudices in ourselves.

Golf is boring. Honor is serving our country. Give me a break.

Well Mr Watson. I think you crossed the line there. Im a fan of both you and tiger. Tiger's going thru a hard time in his life. ANd you should be more supportive.

I remember the divorce/drinking you went thru... No difference. Sin is sin... Im really saddened by your comment....

To much RUSH. He's out of balance.. anyway...Let him who is without sin throw the first stone...

You as a elder statesman should lead by a more forgiving attitude. He/tiger brought you.. That big paycheck you got at the open last summer....

I know tiger is not the only man on tour who's having affairs...Their are many. And I even heard you were accused for awhile..

I say we track Tiger down, and just beat the ever lovin" crap outta him. This whole forum is giving me a good laugh though. Seriously, who cares if Watson made those comments, he was giving his opinion. Tiger will be back before years end, and like Watson and the rest of the bunch who want to give there two cents, he's gonna smoke them like a cheap pack of cigarettes! The good thing about this country is that we have the freedoms we do. Tiger is just gonna have to step up to the plate and take what comes at him. He made a mistake now he has to live with it. God bless America and all our Troops over sea's! Peace!

I totally agree with Watson. I won't spend 10 cents to see Tiger Woods play golf. He is a scum bag and not someone I want my son to admire. Ironic that people that think golf is a game that should be played with honor, admire a man that is the epitome of cheating and having no honor as a man.

Watson is right...Tiger Woody's lame swearing and club throwing...and excuses for losing ('I didn't have my A game') as opposed to Jack's classy attitude are reasons why Tiger was never gonna be The Champ. Yeah he's the greated player and putter ever...but w/o Jack's class when winning or losing...he was never gonna be da Man...whether he was boinking other women or not.

Sorry for typo....greatest...not greated of course. Too bad Tiger Woody's Dad didn't teach him 'class' and respect for the game and others. Again...even w/o the 'parade of bimbo's'...which really is nobody's business...Tiger Woody was a chump for all the reasons mentioned above and that we all saw and heard over the years on National Television. Shame on the USGA for putting up with his on the course behavior. Jack's star will always shine the brightest.
When Jack lost...he genuinely congratulated his opponent for being better...ask the opponents who won that particular day...they all have a great 'Jack story'. Jack's Dad taught him right.

BEST BLACK GOLFER - WORST CHARACTER!

Tom Watson is a class act from head to toe. It's more than appropriate for Watson to tell it like it is. Tiger needs to
hear this from a golf legend. By this time the Golf World should
be bored and exhausted by the unending stream of Tiger's misdeeds.
He needs guidance both on and off the field. Too many of the pros
think the same as Watson but don't have the guts to say it. Tom Watson is a professional through and through; Tiger Woods is just
a spoiled rich child with enormous talent.

I agree 100%

Amen!!! I am beginning to think Tom Watson is a racist!! He, of all people, should not be calling out someone out for marital infidelities, me thinks!! (threw in some Shakespeare so Watson would know how classy I am!!)

Good post by Ceasar- I agree since Tiger era, golfers as well as fans have become idiots, yelling youda man on every shot, hollering out IN THE HOLe when a guy hits a tee shot on a par 4, or an approach from200, lmao, we used to play 18 in 3 to 3 1/2 hours, now it takes up to 5 hours because of all the idiots playing that think they are pros and need to walk around every putt and plumb bob ( most do not even know what the hell plumb bob really is) hope I am around long enough to enjoy golf again someday when Eldrick retires and takes alot of you idiots with him,
I bet his father did not teach him to act like he does on the course, his Mom will probably kick his ass, and should. I also don't care about his public life, do not condone cheating by anyone, but really only concerned with what goes on on the links.
My final hope is that golf fans would stop kissing butt on their beloved favorite golfer, not just Tiger btw. Most of the serious golf fans and golf participants could care less about some of these ignorant opinions, shut your pie holes and learn how to play in 4 hours or less, or quit golf and leave it to those of us who remember how to respect and play the game the way it was meant to be played. My first and last post, adios.

It seems what you are protecting is the way things used to be, back when people were not allow on the course because of their religion or ethnicity. Let's face it Tom Watson is not protecting the history and respect for the game, just his 15 minutes of fame, in an attempt to make up for his past discretions, but wait, people who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Before the emerge of Tiger Woods, golf was just a game people played, now people young and old, who did not play golf, are now playing and watching, bringing the TV rating and the game of golf up. So maybe the tradition and history of the game of golf is not quiet anymore, maybe we should tell all those new and old fans we call spectators to leave. The display of temper and occassional swearing you mention, is called emotions, it comes out because of unforced errors, or accomplishments in the game.

You must mean when it was all white

When I watch Tiger I am watching only Tiger. I don't come to the tv to see his family life, to buy a golf club, or a car. I come to watch the greatest. I don't care if he throws a club or throws a fit. Come back, Tiger.

Amen to nofanoftiger. I admire Tiger's skills as a golfer, but I very much dislike his attitude and actions on the course. The only thing missing from his act would be the trash talk aimed at his opponent and for him to do a dance on the 18th green after he has won. Or maybe, kneeling and making the sign of the cross. I do believe this is the same with all athletes who NEED adoration so much that they will do anything to be the center of attention......winning is NOT enough for Tiger! It is a big publicity stunt. Tiger will return this year and tell everyone that his time in rehab has cured him and he is now ready for more of our LOVE! Wanna bet?

Tom Watson is a great golfer, but he wasn't exactly known for his humility when he was much younger. Its hard to see that any other golfer has the kind of infidelity record that Tiger has, but who knows. And even if they don't, who knows what would happen if all their closets were emptied. As far as mere infidelity is concerned, Tiger is hardly the worst. I'd like to think that Arnie never put his hand in the "cookie jar" even once while Winnie was alive, but do we really know for sure? Same with Jack and Barbara. I didn't hear the interview, but I'd like to hear specific examples of how Tiger wasn't humble. Tiger has been #1 for a while. You don't expect him to carry himself like he's a nobody.

As far as his temper, it definitely is a problem. But once again, he's hardly the first. Golf and the PGA Tour has had its share of hot tempered players over the years. Bobby Jones was originally known for having a hot temper when he was young, though he apparently cleaned up his act. Tommy Bolt was legendary in that regard; he said he taught Arnie to throw clubs "forward", so he could pick them up while walking to his next shot. Guys like Ken Green, Dave Hill (his comment about Hazeltine was horrible--and funny in retrospect), Mac O'Grady, etc.

I think that part of the reason for Tom Watson's comments is deep down the competitive fire still burns, but besides his Open Championship performance last summer, he certainly can't beat Tiger. I think he couldn't resist dumping on someone a little bit who has a better overall record than him and he can do it without being too conspicuous (i.e., others are teeing off on him as well). For the most part, it was probably better left unsaid.

To those of you who condone anyone's swearing, throwing clubs, poor sportsmanship, wide open mouthed screaming, infidility & etc. Is this the conduct to which you want to expose your children? Or do you care? One of the problems with people is the total disregard for polite behavior. Whether it be at home, in public or on the road. Your actions are viewed by your loved ones and others. If you condone these actions you are probably one of the problems today and will perpetuate the problems in the future.
No one else had the guts to speak up. Yea for Tom Watson.

if i were tiger i would just retire and just live a low key life with his family and let the golf world go back to golf the way it was before tiger.

I am a Tiger Woods fan and always will be. He will go down in history as "THE GREATEST GOLFER OF ALL TIME" and I think he deserves that honor. I do not codone what Tiger did to his wife and family and it did throw a negative at the game of golf. When Tiger comes back he will be ravaged by the stinking media and he will be asked all the questions that have been asked over and over again. I think Tiger will come back a few tournaments before the Masters and then continue each week after that. What Tom Watson said about Tiger is true; I'm just surprised it came from his mouth. Good luck for Tiger in his comeback.

Tiger Woods is a sociopath. I think Elin should take her two kids and half of his money and run, not walk, away from this selfish, narcissitic liar. Tiger Woods is not upset at what he did and how he betrayed his family, he's just sorry he got caught. Now he's playing the tired "I have a disease - sex addiction" card. He is a piece of SH$T, who is a horrible role model for young people. He won't sign autographs, throws temper tantrums, is a serial cheater -- in other words Tiger Woods is SCUM. He should take his Blasian ass and never come back to the game of golf. He has hurt the reputation of the game and doesn't deserve to be part of it anymore. He is trash.

I would say that serving one's country is the ultimate honor, but we have the chance to be being honorable every day - or honored, for that matter... as in "I'm honored that my comment about such a "boring" game excited you enough to post!"

ah, everyone please take a deep breath and get hold of yourselves. Tom Watson would like his 15 minute of fame just like those "ladies" being connected to Tiger. I am a fan of Tiger and rooting for him to get his life in order to be with his beautiful family. Tiger made PGA golf very lucrative sources of income for everyone involved in the game since joining the tour as a professional. Tiger is the greatest golfer ever, not Jack, Ernie, Walter or anyone that previously played the game. And no one individual has a right to judge or attack Tiger for what he did because it was purely a private matter. It is between him and his wife Elin to work a solution during this trying times in their lives. So everybody needs to butt out!!!!

Tom Watson and everyone else out there on some judgmental high horse need to embrace whatever it is they have going on for themselves and shut the .... up!!!! It is OK to jump all in someome else's business while not tending your own for some folks it seems. Bad for golf, he put golf on the forefront did Tiger and it is still glorious due to him.

he should just mind his own attitude of holier than thow .And start thanking Tiger for making himm a rich man by bringing more exposure to the game of golf

You, zaq, have no idea what you are talking about. Watson's contributions to the game and his financial success precede Woods. He owes nothing to Woods, and he has every right to comment on such a classless primadonna that is Woods. Woods may certainly be the richest golfer on the planet, and he may certainly be the mosted gifter player ever, but all that gets you is wealth and celebrity, the more important things like personal honor and personal respect, well, those are two things Woods will never attain.

Bringing up Tiger Woods behaviour should have been done years ago. Think of all the children who took up the game because of him and they see him cussing on the tee or anywhere on the course and they do it and when told not to behave like this they say well Tiger does it. Tim Finchem should have been able to nip this in the bud like the USTA did with Serena Williams.

We tune in to whatch a golf tournament not watch only one man go around cussing. If I had my way he would never step on a golf course again because of his golf behaviour but also his personal behaviours. His kids will one day be able to read these disgusting stories because believe me someone somewhere will keep them. Get on with another life Tiger and leave the game of golf to the gentlemen that play it.

Actually, the reality is, if anyone wants change in their life and have the guts, focus and strength to work for it, it is attainable. As far as Watson's comments about Tiger swearing and throwing clubs - I've been to many tournaments - long before Tiger and as recently as the Hope last week - some filthy mouthed dudes on tour, the reason it's noticed more with Tiger is because the press is always in his face and we hear it all. I'm not condoning swearing, just an observation. I think it's just as offensive when a player lays a cigarette on the green while he puts and then puts it back in his mouth...see it all the time, and think it's as nasty as hell...

Leave race out of it. Tiger was embraced by everyone, black, brown, white and yellow. If some of these people now see him in another light, it isn't racist. Obama and Tiger. Great when everythings going well but your a racist if you say anything negative. Grow up and get over the racist thing and make the world a better place.

Before we demonize Tiger, let's look at some other high-profile affairs:

Bill Clinton, JFK, John Edwards, Prince Charles, Eliot Spitzer, Mark Sanford
A-Rod, Kobe Bryant, Muhammed Ali, Steve McNair
Hugh Grant, Brad Pitt, Jude Law

While Tiger's actions are definitely inexcusable, try to realize he is human (and only 34). And don't assume that you know what he was thinking or is now thinking. Despite his infidelities he is arguably the best golfer in history, or at least close to it. Even if he ends his career (doubt it though), he will be remembered as a golf phenomenon despite also being remembered for these actions. Unless you condemn all other famous people who cheat, it is unfair to place Tiger in a category by himself.

With all due respect, Tom Watson should put a sock in it! Here's a passage he is more than likely familiar with, 'let he who is without sin cast the first stone.' I'm not making excuses for Tiger Woods, he has certainly dug quite a hole for himself. But for Mr. Watson to lecture Tiger on what he needs to do to get his house in order during an interview is distasteful and very off putting. If you don't think Tiger "gets it" at this point, think again Mr. Watson. You looked like just another talking bobbly head... I've found it's those people who have the biggest opinions about something who are generally full of it. And Mr. Watson is no exception!

Did Tom Watson actually try to judge Tiger? Ask his ex-wife Linda what kind of booty chasing drunk he was. If you live in a glass house - don't throw no stones.

Tom Watson, after all the crap he's been through and done should not be judging anyone. Ask Dennis Watson. And all the booze before that. He should understand a little but apparently now. Too bad.

w w w . l e t t e r f r o m j o h n . c o m

Haven't we seen worse behavior in basketball, football, tennis and other sports? Why is golf different? Ah, because golf is a "gentleman's game", played best by gentlemen like Jeff Maggert, Fred Couples and Ernie Els? Golf would have remained a "gentleman's game" - probably to many posters' (like nofanoftiger) liking, I bet - with no TV contracts and no multi-million $ purses if played only by people like Jeff Maggert, Fred Couples and Ernie Els. Bottom line is, Watson should have complained openly before, not when Tiger Woods is down.

in the current era of golf there is only one tiger woods. in my era there were many more: tom watson, lee trevino, seve ballesteros, gary player, arnold palmer and of course jack nicklaus. i personally saw each of these great golfers play golf.i've also seen woods play at different tournaments. i doubt if woods would have his current number of majors playing in the mix of these greats.as small proof of this take the british open last year. a nearly 60 year old tom watson nearly won the british open, woods didn't make the cut. each one of the greats i mentioned possessed the tough personal character that golf was built around. for instance nicklaus won majors even in the face of being constantly villified by sportswriters for surpassing their hero arnold palmer.in my opinion woods lacks the character have intimidated these players. i can only imagine what woods would do if trevino playfully threw a rubber snake at woods' feet.what watson in his quiet manner tried to say is that woods has great golf skills but not great personal character.he left an opening for woods to come back and show he does possess character.

Judge not lest ye be judged

He among you who is without sin - let him throw the first stone

That's my two cents

afn&tt

Ok, I gave up reading about halfway through so if anyone has already made this point fine. Tom Watson judging Tiger or anyone else for infidelity may not fly. But his comment was about how it affects the game of golf, the infidelity and the tantrums and for that, HE'S RIGHT. As to Tom Watson being in a class with Tiger or Palmer or Nicklaus, all you have to do is type in the simeple words "top 100 golfers" of all time and in three different lists, Watsons name comes in at number 10, 12, and 11. Out of the top 100 of all time, I hardly think his record of excelence needs defending. He's hands down in a class with all three including St. Tiger!

LOL....... Someone finally made some sence.....

Amen. Tiger needs to shape up or quit the game. Tom Watson couldn't have said it any better.

shame on you Joey. Be human not God

Tiger's personal life has no impact on how the game of golf is viewed... golf is golf.

The people who are talking about how Tiger's off the course affairs have damaged the image of golf are totally wrong...Tiger Woods is not "golf" and "golf" isn't Tiger Woods...he's just a player...though he may be the worlds #1 player...he still is just a player. Long after he leaves the game..."golf" will still be "golf", just like it was "golf" before Tiger came along.

As far as Tiger making a public appearance and giving a statement, I could care less. All I want to see is Tiger back on the course playing again.

The history of golf, "a gentleman sport"...who created that BS saying. What made it a "gentleman sport"? Who verified that every player was a "gentleman"?

Times have changed and liked every thing else in the world change has come to the PGA...and no, this change isn't due to Tiger Woods alone, because there are many players on the PGA who have issues with their temper, cursing and slamming clubs...Tigers not the only one.

As far as Tom Watson...well, he has a right to say what he feels...and he said it...like it or not.

I hope Cheetah goes away and never comes back. He's a loser now and aways has been. I've never seen a poorer winner or loser. When my son recently played his way into a playoff of a golf tournament I said to him before heading to the tee of the playoff hole, "I'm proud of you, but whatever happens, win or lose, don't act like Tiger Woods." He knew what I meant and acted like a gentleman in defeat. I was proud of him and know he hasn't picked up all the bad habits of his former idol.

I need a smoke after reading all of this...
The person I feel sorry for is Tigers Mom...
Tiger you have made your Mom very proud...

Hey there Lee. Have you ever heard that old saying " It is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt"

First of all, when Woods throws his clubs and curses out loud he definitely does not look like the "greatest golfer of all time". That's the stuff amateurs do on the course. He's immature. His infidelities prove that. And secondly to all you Afro-Americans who are commenting about Tiger being the greatest in a white man's game and receiving racial bias because of it. Tiger isn't even black, he's Cablinasian! Remember? He doesn't even want to be black! Don't blame his persecution on Whitey!

SCREW TOM WATSON, MR.CHOKE! I DON'T THINK HE TRULY HAS THE RIGHT TO TELL TIGER WHAT HE NEEDS TO DO BEFORE HE ENTERS BACK INTO THE REALM OF GOLF, BESIDES HE AND EVERYONE OF THE PGA MEMBERS SHOULD BE MORE CONSIDERING BECAUSE THEY ALL KNOW WHAT TEMPTATIONS ARE OUT THERE DURING THE TOURNAMENTS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE TOP PLAYER OF THE TOUR!WATSON HAS ONCE BEEN RANKED NUM.1, AND I DO BELIEVE HE MAY HAVE DONE SOME CHEATING IN HIS DAY. THE THING IS, THE MEDIA WASN'T THERE FOR GOLF, SO WHO WOULD HAVE KNOWN, SO SINCE THE ENTRANCE OF TIGER, WHO WE ALL KNOW WITHOUT HIM THE PGA WILL SUFFER! CHECK THE RATINGS, LOSE SPONSORS AND SO FORTH. WITH THAT I THINK TOM WATSON SHOULD NOT ONLY THANK TIGER! HE SHOULD SO MORE RESPECT, BECAUSE SINCE TIGER EXISTENCE THE PAY IS A LOT GREATER FOR ANY PLAYER WHO MAKES THE CUT IN A TOURNAMENT, I CAN BET U THAT THE CHECK WATSON RECIEVED AS RUNNER-UP FOR THE BRITISH OPEN LAST YEAR IS FOR MORE GREATER THAN ANY CHECK HE HAS CASH AS CHAMPION DURING HIS HAY-DAY ON THE TOUR!

Watson "only a senior golfer with little accomplishment"????? Lee where have you been the last 30 years....that statement only shows that you are among the new generation of golf fan or as pure golf fans call you Tiger Lover.....Woods is like every other modern day super star that we have made millions of dollars and he still thinks he"s above the law and we still owe him more....Woods has proved once again he is a clown and a punk....if ur gonna blog about the game of golf go to your local book store and read up on old Tom Watson and his having accomplished nothing1

If a person has an extramarital affair, I would call it breach of promise to his or her spouse. If you have a lot of them, I would think you don't care about anything but your "johnson", period.
Tigre is the best "golfer" on the tour today, and maybe the best ever, but I have never been able to realy like the guy. I don't think he shows alot of class. If you want a model of class, my pick would be Payne Stewart, but that is just my opinion.

I am no fan of woods. I have heard him use God's name in vain over two dozen times, the f-word and sh--. He's thrown clubs and acted like a spoiled brat. yet and still he's treaded as a "darling" by the media as he can do no wrong. He's good but classless. He can cuss God but if someone yelled the n-word they would shut the tour down. We must be P.C but morals and intregrity don't count anymore. This is my opinion and I sticking with it.

great come back.

'watson pointing fingers at tiger, how clean is his past?

Regarding Mr. Watson's comments on cussing and throwing clubs. I admit this is sort of childish and immature. Many people, pro or not have done this. Frustration first class! Not that I sign off on that, I don't. But let's look into what I think is behind his immaturity.

Tiger as we all know by now has a problem The extent of it is still on the "QT", so I won't say anymore on his "rehab" right now.

My point is as I stated much earlier, if you watched him before this all unraveled, he seemed uneasy, hard on himself, far from having fun on his last few tournaments..as if he was in his own little world.

Well, then came the news that we all heard and over talked this issue way too much. His actions that he was involved with obviously created the type of personality that was shown on the course before all this came crashing down on him!

We all know fairly well his schedule, while remaining married, being with Elin, he somehow found time while away to maintain all these social calls, text messaging, etc in addition to maintaining his marriage and his career, a pro golfer! How many people could keep up this kind of schedule so long?

And tell me this wouldn't change your personality in any way? Please, don't bother to ask. You know the result as well as I.

Throwing clubs, cussing, tightening up on almost every hole, walking around by himself, I saw this all on camera. He just wasn't himself. Few smiles, mainly after a decent game or hole, which of late didn't come often.

Tiger simply was a tired, exhausted, and stressed out man! Cussing and tossing golf clubs was only a small part of it!

Well, stop watching already. Why tell the world, just do it! As for back in the day, its well known that reporters back then had better one on one personal relationships with the star athletes they were reporting on and wouldn't report all they found in order to remain on the stars good list and get interviews. Most people never even knew Arnie & Jack smoked a whole lot while on the course. That's because the reporters back then wouldn't risk being blacklisted by printing such a thing. In today's media, all is fair game and on the table.

You are such an obvious hypocrite that calling you out would be a waste of time and energy. Arnie, Tom, Gary, & Jack aren't holier-than-thou, and damn sure aren't perfect either. Each has skeletons his closet, but thanks to the structure of media/star relations during those eras, nothing negative was reported to the masses as would be the case today. Placing Tiger in John Daly's category is just being ridiculous at best. Tiger has more majors than anyone but Jack at this point and easily will best even him eventually. Therefore, he is clearly BETTER THAN ALL THE ABOVE! A person's athletic achievements are history and speak for themselves and is to be dissected totally separate from their personal endeavors. So how is it you can say that what Tiger has already done- which earned him Athlete of the Decade by the way- is now less significant because of Tiger's cheating ways. If that's the case Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky, etc would be considered less than they really were too.

I don't think this is a color issue either, but then again I didn't start the discussion on color. That being said, hold on just a damn minute. Golf was until the sixties and early seventy's a bastion of white's only America- as was society as a whole. This is established fact and history and not up for discussion. Even well into the ninety's a LOT of country club's still didn't have ANY members of color and MOST didn't have any females period! Remember Augusta National anyone? So please lets not act like golf itself is holier-than-thou because it isn't. As for Tiger's input and actions, well let's see the game has enjoyed a nearly fourfold increase in its purse and popularity not just here but around the world. There are more people of color throughout the world than Caucasians you know and that is where all the real growth and opportunity will come from. All Tiger has done is make golf mainstream a la football, basketball, baseball, and not just for older white males. If he were to hang up his clubs today, I BET YOU that the total purse of golf tournaments would go DOWN and the t.v. ratings would stay far lower too. Therefore, it's safe to say that Tiger has done a lot more for the sport than anyone this side of Arnie in that regard too. While he may not be perfect, and let he who is step forward, he certainly hasn't hurt the game in any way as its better off now than it ever was. If anything is a threat to golf's viability its this recession and economy that we've inherited from the Republicans and will have to soldier through the next year to 1 1/2years to get through. That's the REAL THREAT to golf- and every thing else!

Any true fan of golf, despite who is playing enjoys the sport. I heard no one complaining when the payoffs grew astonomically because of the "Woods Syndrome." I have seen many older golfers, throw their clubs in the air and stomp or dig their clubs in the ground after a bad shot. In being older, I am quite sure golfers did more than they do today. Golfers of the past did a lot of smoking and drinking on the course. They did not have the voices of television to deal with and microphones surrounding the whole golf course. Sounds to me as if you have other issues...

DITTO! DITTO! DITTO! I think some are just anger they are not still makin BIG money off of him. Where it not for the GRACE of GOD that could be anyone of them. It just goes to show he is only human. I pray he and his wife work thing out and stay together.

THIS TOO SHALL PASS.

Bout time someone stood up to Tiger about anything! He is an abusing bully, standing in the line of sight during putting set ups, get yourr ass out of the way toughguy. Not asking the crowd to settle down after great putt or play so next up can have same opp for success. Finally someone standng up to the cussing and ranting spoiled brat who has made a living intimidating his opponents with an angry demeanor that most are AFRAIDDDDD of speaking out against! Enough already! The playing field is now level, the phony veneer broken, and oh, how come we dont expect THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME, to break the majors record by 6 or 8 wins and not by just one, the way JN broke the old record and left all others a 100 miles in His rear view mirror, I propose no more passes for this baby cheater and we start busting his much used balls!!!!!!

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Tom Watson should refrain from commenting on the Tiger issue given that he is not even a good role model himself. Watson struggled with alcoholism during is pro career, which lead to his first wife divorcing him. Watson should think about his past experiences and the fact that he did not want his personal troubles being discussed publicly - maybe he should give Tiger some privacy and respect

Tiger has been the best golf has ever seen for a number of years. I don't ever remeber jack or Tom winning 50% of all the turnments they enetred. They were OK, but to compare them is like comparing Muhammed Ali to the great white hope inventions of the 70's.

Mind your own buisnes about people's personal life. That's enough for anyone to concentrate on.

If we ar going to talk garbage, I wonder how many holes Tom has stuck his 4 iron in over the years.

As I think about it, maybe I was premature in critisixing Tom. He didn't really mean to trash talk Tiger in order to slavage the "history" of the white mans game. It just spilled out of him cuase he was drunk and diddling someone.

Nice to see you have such high morales!
There is a great difference between one infidelity and over a dozen.
Maybe that doesn't matter much in your world.
As far as Tom Watson not having acheived anything, I think your knowledge of golf is as empty as your standards.

Tiger,Tiger, burning bright
Hits a golf ball out of sight
Has a lovely wife at home
Goes and leaves her all alone
Now he's in a major fight
Cos of what he does at night
Like the ladies so they say,
Loves to look around and play
Have no pity for the Brat
Arrogance is where he's at
I just hope he's done with golf
To me he's just a surly oaf.

Bad for Golf? WTF is this idiot talking about? He has been out in the sun too long?

If Tiger stays out of golf for the whole year and the prize money drops by 50% and television rating fall through the floor then we'll see how much they are going to be begging for Tiger to come back.

Tiger is the PGA tour and he is golf. Like it our not. Besides golf is so boring when no one displays any emotion.

you or in left field Waston, you or nobody esle have anything to do with what this man do off the course , he is not the first and will not be the last , be careful how you keep saying waston or anyone else has erand the right to speak about what Tiger did. I think if Mr. waston took 50% of his time take care of his businees and 50% staying out of other folks , he will be a lot better off. Ask mr. Waston about his conduct when he played Lee Tervio at the Canandian Open.

Please I cant believe that nobody here has said it yet...... Put yourself in his shoes, married or not if you had all that money and beautiful women were throwing themselves at you are you telling me you would honestly walk away? All of you? As for me, I would try and hit every ass that came in my path...... And he never asked to be a role model, this is like people killing themsleves because the listened to a Judist Priest album or some shit..... Gimme a break, hes a rich dude with a dick.......

Agree with FlashHarry.

White guys have been internally fuming about Tiger taking over golf since the late 90's. (Same issue happened with Hank Aaron)It is racial in part and jealousy the other part. Most of the current crowd would be earning minimum wage without Tiger and they know it and many others are just crossing their fingers hoping nobody finds out about their women issues. Allot of them are shutting up cause they have known this has been going on with Tiger and have gotten into the action themselves....probably set Tiger up on some of these dates...wink wink nod nod. I don't think anyone should cheat on a spouse, they should just leave them if really unhappy, but that's everyone's personal buisness.

With respect to the heritage and manners in the golf game, I prefer a few swears to what happened in the "golden age" of golf's history. Yeah, the old timers had allot of manners. They wouldn't speak up when blacks and Jews were kept out of the game because they were so "well mannered". Hell, they wouldn't have hollered fire, even if their own black caddy's were on fire.

Hey Wayne if it was my sister it would be none of my business and dont try to be flippant and try to dismiss racism as something borne out of being small minded. You may not be a racist but don't try to fool yourself that alot of this isn't about race. Get real racism does exist in America. We dont have to be nasty about that fact. Just accept it for what it is and stop trying to be coy by disguising your true feelings by way of silly comments regarding throwing of clubs etc. Not all golfers get fired up about their game. But dont you sit there and try to tell me that Tiger is the only golfer on tour who uses the "F BOMB" during the course of a round or tosses his or her clubs every now and then. NO ONE IS PERFECT INCLUDING ME!!!!

i do truly understand what you mean when you speak of Tiger's personal and his professional life but it's unreasonable to think that one won't effect the other.he's in public eye and no matter how we try we can't think that one won't invade the other

The swearing and club-throwing HAS been an issue; it's not new. Tiger himself has made comments about being the most fined golfer. But he doesn't care. The PGA doesn't publish info on punishments or fines, probably because it would "tarnish" the image of golf, which is what the fines, etc are supposed to prevent. It does show a lack of class, though, on Tiger's part. He;s not the only one, but he apparently is one of the worst.

Black?? Back of what bus? Tiger is bi-racial and is just as much Philipino and he is black. When is this country going to STOP playing the race card when it is convenient to their issue. Oh and by the way, our President is BI-RACIAL as well in case anyone has forgotten.
Tiger Woods has a lot of issues that he needs to deal with. He's been the fair haired and mit's off golden boy of golf and he treated it badly. He needs to grow up and realize he has a responsibility to the sport that has affored him so much. The PGA tour just like others major league sports has it's bad boys, and it is a discrace to the fans who supports and pay the overinflated salaries for bad behavior.

I notice that my earlier blog regarding Tiger's wife being white with blonde hair and blue eyes have been removed. I wonder why? My comment was void of expletives, whether disguised or otherwise, and mereley stated some facts. Michael Jordan was not castigated by white nor by African Americans when he cheated on his non-white wife and he was and still is a popular celebrity. I did not hear this public scream about his filandering ways and his negative impact on youngsters as a role model. Something is wrong with this picture and the whole thing smells. I hope freedom of speech is not going the same route. I still maintain that if Tiger's wife and the women he supposedly had affairs with were African American, the furore that we are now seeing and hearing everywhere about this GREAT GOLFER, largely from the white community, would never exist. This is not about swearing or tossing golf clubs, this is about trying to bring down and dimish the accomplishments of a GREAT ALL AMERICAN AND PROFESSIONAL GOLFER. SHAME ON YOU.

i'm so sorry that i've offened u with my post. but let me just ask u one question, do u think that "all things are equal" in america? meaning, does evrybody(black, white, asian, hispanic, etc...)all have "equal" oppurtunity in this coyntry? if your answer is yes, when did that happen, ie....what year? if your answer is no, then there is the answer to the question in your post! looking foward to your response! ;O)

I CAN'T BELIVE YOU EVEN BROUGHT THE RACE CARD INTO THIS....YOU ARE AN IDIOT.......TIME TO PUT THAT CARD AWAY...

You refer to racism by using the phrase "using the race card" as if racism is not real as if it is some far fetched inanimate thing that is incomprehensible and doesn't exist. You need to go read about the history of America visa vie racism and get in touch with reality. Ignorance is truly bliss. It seems as if you are the
ill- informed IDIOT!!!!! Sticking your head in the sand and pretending that things are not what they are is the behaviour of dumb ostriches if you know what I mean.

WOW, another "you're an idiot comment". didn't u read Rick Chandlers's post telling everyone that "Andre', IS NOT AN IDIOT" now, i hope that clears everything up. have a nice day! :O)

Yes, I do have HIGH "morales" [sic]. I hope you could also spell correctly, i.e., if you are educated.

INFEDILITY IS INFIDELITY (whether you have 1 or 100 women). I do not condone Tiger's infidelity; I CONDEMN IT!

Wouldn't it be nice if Watson would admit, on record and in public, that he has committed INFEDLITY.

Another thing. Why is Watson just coming out now to call out Tiger about his swearing, etc. I guess Watson has FADED in the background and wants to be noticed and have the spotlight on him. I would take criticisms of Tiger, anytime, from Jack and Arnie, NOT Watson who is just a name in golf. NOT IN THE TOP TEN OF THE BEST GOLFERS!!!

IT IS NOT B.S. It is the result of a lawsuit. The PGA, the USGA and the R & A all
state the clubs Phil is using are perfectly LEGAL! Anyone can use them. There are plenty of
them around.

wj

Lets face it, many of the Tiger haters haven't watched any golf since Tiger last played and probably won't watch another tournement until he returns. When he does return, they will all line up to watch him, extoling him to get on his kness and beg their forgiveness, but in reality, they will be watching because the best golfer in the history of the game by far, will be teeing up. I bet Jack and Tom and Arnie will be hoping he gets weak knees and shivers in embarrassment and pass out on the first tee and never return to golf, so that they can maintain their spot in history. However, that was over a decade ago no matter what hapens from this point on.

I hope Tiger deals with whatever he needs to deal with in total privacy, never talks to anyone pubicly and then returns to kicking butt as always.

With respect to racism, its still all over the place. Most of the negative reaction to Obama this past year is clear evidence of that, but we don't need to look far to know how people get treated in real life. Their are many who would like to pretend that it isn't an issue and everyone is treated the same in the good ol USA, but they have their heads in the sand.

I was totally with you on this, until you tried to rhyme "golf" and "oaf." Like Icarus, James flew too close to the sun. So sad.

Respectfully speaking, Tom Watson should be mature enough to know how and when to shut up and mind his own business.

It's the reporters' job to ask these questions - I get it, but people need to use some discretion and judgement when blathering out their opinions on matters that really don't concern them. Tom should take a lesson from Phil's diplomatic response to the question.

Simply put, Tiger is so popular not only because he's so good, but also because he actually shows emotion when he plays. If that comes out as a curse now and then, well, join the club. Nobody's perfect, not even you, Tom.

News Flash Mr. Watson... Tiger Woods is un like any other player that you've seen. I don't know how true your own infidelity is and I do respect what you have done for the game(just dont remember any of it) but give it a rest. We are talking about a player whose name is synonymous with the game.. Like Michael Jordan is with basketball. Why does Tiger need to apologize to the public for his private life? He needs to do just what he is doing... working it out with his wife. Why does he have to crawl back into the game on his belly.. begging and pleading because of his PERSONAL indiscretions that havent hurt the sport to people such as yourself? Jack Nicholas can ask for such... Arnold Palmer can ask as well ...but not you! I tell you what when your name creates such a frenzy that every other player benefits from, then speak your piece...until then enjoy your retirement(or should be retired) and shut up!

Watson is not in the TOP 10 Great Golfers (and will never be). So stop placing him in Jack, Arnie and Tiger's category. Watson will only be mentioned as one of the best players, NOT one of the GREATEST!

The only reason Watson is in the news is because he tries to take a stab at Tiger. Otherwise, his name will not be mentioned and nobody cares about Watson. If it was Jack or Arnie talking (and they are not), may be I will give them my time and attention. Watson - not worth it.

Well, let's start with you going back home to your Mom and learn about minding your own personal business!

RIGHT BACK AT YOU!!!!

It really surprises me reading when people refer to his 6th, 9th, 14th, 15th, 16th mistresses as if what they hear and read is true. Are there any intelligent or educated people on this website?

Did anyone "read" Rick Chandler's box at the top before getting on here? This is what he says:

This blog is updated multiple times daily with sports news for the infirm and the socially inept. Please remove shoes before entering blog. Not for centaurs.

Man by your spelling, you seem like a real 2nd grader....

All the Tiger comments aside - and yes: grow up and stop swearing and throwing clubs - I object to golf being called a sport. It's technically considered a hobby, so say it like it is, folks.
